Social structure : The patterned arrangement of relationships, roles, groups, and institutions within a community. It describes the durable patterns that organize members of a society.
Socialization : The lifelong process through which people learn the norms, roles, and practices of their communities. It passes shared ways of life between society and its members.
Family : A socially recognized network of kinship, care, or domestic relationships. Families organize care, belonging, and intergenerational ties within society.
Population : The people inhabiting a defined area or belonging to a specified group. A population counts members; society also involves organized relationships and shared institutions.
Auguste Comte : A nineteenth-century French thinker who coined the term sociology and argued for a science of society. Comte helped establish the systematic study of society as a distinct intellectual project.
Social norm : A shared expectation about appropriate behavior in a group or community. Norms guide conduct even when formal laws do not.
Social control : Formal and informal means by which groups encourage conformity to norms. It explains how societies respond when expectations are followed or breached.
