Sociocultural evolution

Sociocultural evolution is the long-term transformation of societies and cultures through changes in institutions, technologies, social organization, and beliefs. It describes historical change without implying that every society follows one path or advances toward a single end.

Cultural evolution: The change in cultural traits and their distribution through processes such as transmission, variation, and selection. It isolates how cultural traits change and spread within broader social transformations.
Auguste Comte: A French philosopher who founded positivism and proposed a staged account of intellectual development. His stage theory helped establish early attempts to describe long-term social change.
Unilineal evolution: A theory that societies progress through the same fixed sequence of developmental stages. It is the single-track model historically associated with sociocultural evolution.
Neolithic Revolution: The transition in many regions from foraging toward farming and settled life beginning around 10,000 BCE. Agriculture and settlement transformed population size, labor, property, and political organization.
Social Darwinism: A set of ideologies that applied evolutionary ideas to justify competition, hierarchy, or inequality among human groups. It shows how descriptive claims about social change were turned into political prescriptions.
Social learning: Learning by observing or interacting with other people rather than relying only on individual experience. It explains how practices and knowledge pass between people and generations.
Herbert Spencer: A nineteenth-century English philosopher who applied evolutionary language to societies and social institutions. His work made social evolution a prominent nineteenth-century framework.
Multilinear evolution: An approach proposing that societies follow different evolutionary paths shaped by distinct conditions. It rejects one universal sequence while retaining comparative study of long-term change.
State formation: The historical process through which centralized political institutions and territorial authority emerge. It tracks how changing forms of coordination and power produce states.
Eugenics: A movement advocating the direction of human reproduction to alter inherited traits in populations. Evolutionary language helped lend authority to coercive policies and racial hierarchies.
