Soda–lime glass

Soda–lime glass is a silicate glass made chiefly from silica, sodium oxide, and calcium oxide. Its low cost and workable properties make it the standard glass for windows and containers.

Silica: Silicon dioxide, a compound found in quartz and sand and the primary glass-forming ingredient in many glasses. Silica forms the glass network that gives soda–lime glass its structure.
Glassmaking: The industrial process of producing glass by melting raw materials and shaping the melt. Soda–lime glass is produced through this broad sequence of melting and forming.
Window glass: Transparent or translucent flat glass used in building and vehicle openings. Soda–lime float glass is the standard material for many architectural windows.
Borosilicate glass: A silica glass containing boron oxide, valued for low thermal expansion and resistance to thermal shock. It tolerates rapid temperature changes better than ordinary soda–lime glass.
Sodium carbonate: A sodium salt used in glassmaking as a source of sodium oxide. It supplies soda, which lowers the temperature needed to melt silica.
Float glass: Flat glass made by floating molten glass on a bath of molten tin. The float process makes much of the flat soda–lime glass used in buildings.
Glass bottle: A hollow glass container, commonly used to package beverages, food, and medicines. Its low cost and formability make soda–lime glass common in bottles.
Fused silica: High-purity glass made primarily from silica, with very low thermal expansion and high optical transmission. It performs at temperatures and thermal changes that soda–lime glass handles poorly.
Calcium oxide: An inorganic compound also called quicklime, used in glassmaking and other industrial processes. It supplies lime, helping make the glass more resistant to water.
Glass blowing: A forming technique in which air expands a gather of molten glass into a hollow object. Blowing shapes soda–lime glass into bottles and other hollow vessels.
