Knowra Sodium bicarbonate Sodium bicarbonate Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is a water-soluble ionic compound composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. It releases carbon dioxide when heated or reacted with acids and is used in baking, cleaning, and medicine.
Bicarbonate : Bicarbonate is the HCO₃⁻ ion, an intermediate in carbon dioxide transport and a weak acid–base buffer. This ion is sodium bicarbonate’s reactive anion and the source of its acid–base behavior.
Baking powder : Baking powder is a dry mixture of sodium bicarbonate, one or more acids, and usually a starch. Unlike baking soda alone, it includes the acid needed to release carbon dioxide in batter.
Ionic compound : An ionic compound consists of positively and negatively charged ions held together by electrostatic attraction. Sodium bicarbonate is an ionic solid made from Na⁺ and HCO₃⁻ ions.
Sodium carbonate : Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) is a strongly alkaline sodium salt used in glassmaking, detergents, and water treatment. Heating sodium bicarbonate forms sodium carbonate, which is more alkaline and contains no bicarbonate ion.
Acid–base reaction : An acid–base reaction transfers a proton between a proton donor and a proton acceptor. Acids protonate bicarbonate, forming carbonic acid that decomposes into water and carbon dioxide.
Antacid : An antacid is a substance that neutralizes stomach acid to relieve symptoms such as heartburn. Sodium bicarbonate acts as a fast-acting antacid by neutralizing hydrochloric acid.
Sodium ion : The sodium ion, Na⁺, is a positively charged ion formed when a sodium atom loses one electron. It is the cation paired with bicarbonate in the compound’s formula.
Potassium bicarbonate : Potassium bicarbonate (KHCO₃) is a soluble salt containing potassium and bicarbonate ions. It supplies bicarbonate like sodium bicarbonate but replaces sodium with potassium.
Carbonic acid : Carbonic acid is a weak acid formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water. It forms transiently when bicarbonate reacts with acid and readily yields carbon dioxide and water.
Acid indigestion : Acid indigestion is discomfort associated with stomach acid irritating the upper digestive tract. Neutralizing stomach acid is the basis for sodium bicarbonate’s use to relieve this symptom.
