Sodium bromate

Sodium bromate is the inorganic salt NaBrO₃, a strong oxidizing agent used in chemical processes and formerly in some hair treatments and flour improvers.

Bromate: Bromate is the polyatomic anion BrO₃⁻, in which bromine has oxidation state +5. This anion is the reactive part of sodium bromate.
Bromate flour treatment: Bromate flour treatment uses bromate salts to strengthen dough during baking. Sodium bromate was used as a flour improver before safety restrictions curtailed that use.
Bromate toxicity: Bromate toxicity is the harmful effect of bromate exposure, including gastrointestinal injury and kidney damage. The salt’s oxidizing bromate ion drives its acute toxicity.
Ionic compound: An ionic compound is a substance composed of positively and negatively charged ions held together by electrostatic attraction. Sodium bromate consists of sodium cations and bromate anions.
Sodium chlorate: Sodium chlorate is the ionic compound NaClO₃, a strong oxidizing agent containing chlorate ions. It is a structurally related chlorate salt with chlorine replacing bromine.
Oxidation–reduction reaction: An oxidation–reduction reaction transfers electrons between chemical species, changing their oxidation states. Sodium bromate accepts electrons as it oxidizes other substances.
Cold wave: A cold wave is a permanent-wave hair treatment that reshapes hair using chemical reduction and oxidation. Sodium bromate served as an oxidizing neutralizer in some cold-wave formulations.
Bromate-induced nephrotoxicity: Bromate-induced nephrotoxicity is kidney injury caused by exposure to bromate compounds. Kidney damage is a major documented consequence of substantial bromate exposure.
Sodium: Sodium is the chemical element with atomic number 11, a reactive alkali metal. Sodium forms the Na⁺ cation in the salt.
Sodium perchlorate: Sodium perchlorate is the ionic compound NaClO₄, containing the perchlorate ion. Its chlorine oxyanion has a different composition and oxidation state from bromate.
