Sodium bromide

Sodium bromide (NaBr) is an ionic compound made of sodium cations and bromide anions. It forms white, water-soluble crystals.

Sodium ion: A positively charged sodium atom, usually formed when sodium loses one electron. Each formula unit contains one sodium cation paired with a bromide anion.
Dissolution: The process by which a substance disperses into a solvent at the molecular or ionic scale. Water separates sodium and bromide ions from the crystal lattice.
Silver bromide: A light-sensitive silver halide used in photographic materials. Bromide from sodium bromide can supply the halide in silver bromide precipitation.
Sodium chloride: The ionic compound NaCl, commonly known as table salt. Replacing bromide with the smaller chloride ion changes crystal dimensions and some physical properties.
Bromide: The negatively charged ion Br−, formed when a bromine atom gains one electron. Bromide supplies the negative charge that balances sodium in NaBr.
Solvation: The surrounding of dissolved particles by solvent molecules. Water molecules stabilize the ions released from sodium bromide.
Photographic fixer: A processing solution that removes undeveloped light-sensitive silver halides from photographic film or paper. Sodium bromide can be used in photographic processing baths, though it is not the principal fixing agent.
Potassium bromide: The ionic compound KBr, made of potassium cations and bromide anions. It shares bromide with NaBr but has a different alkali-metal cation.
Ionic bond: An electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Attraction between Na+ and Br− holds the crystal together.
Hydration shell: The layer of water molecules organized around a dissolved ion or molecule. Hydration shells help keep Na+ and Br− dispersed in solution.
