Sodium permanganate

Sodium permanganate is an inorganic salt, NaMnO₄, composed of sodium ions and permanganate ions. It is a water-soluble strong oxidizing agent.

Permanganate: The MnO₄⁻ ion, a tetrahedral manganese oxyanion and strong oxidizing agent. The permanganate ion is the reactive component of sodium permanganate.
Water treatment: Processes that improve water quality for drinking, industrial use, or environmental release. Sodium permanganate is used to oxidize contaminants in water.
Sodium: A soft, highly reactive alkali metal with atomic number 11. Sodium forms the positively charged ion paired with permanganate.
Sodium dichromate: An inorganic sodium salt containing dichromate ions, used as a strong oxidizing agent. It is an alternative inorganic oxidant, but contains toxic chromium(VI).

Sodium chlorate: An inorganic salt, NaClO₃, used as an oxidizer and in industrial chemical production. It is another soluble sodium oxidizer with different reaction chemistry and hazards.
Manganese: A chemical element with atomic number 25, occurring in multiple oxidation states. Manganese is in the +7 oxidation state in the permanganate ion.
Chemical oxidation: Use of oxidizing substances to transform chemical compounds through electron transfer. The salt serves as a reagent for oxidizing compounds in solution.
