Sofya Kovalevskaya

Sofya Kovalevskaya (1850–1891) was a Russian mathematician and writer whose work advanced analysis, partial differential equations, and rigid-body mechanics. She became the first woman appointed to a full professorship in mathematics at a European university.

Partial differential equation: An equation involving an unknown function and its partial derivatives with respect to multiple variables. Kovalevskaya’s theorem establishes local existence and uniqueness for a broad class of analytic equations of this kind.
