Sokoto Caliphate

An Islamic state established in what is now northern Nigeria after Usman dan Fodio’s jihad beginning in 1804. It was conquered by Britain in 1903, though many of its emirates persisted under colonial rule.

Caliphate: An Islamic polity whose ruler claims authority as caliph over a Muslim community. The Sokoto state organized its political authority around a caliph.
Usman dan Fodio: A Fulani Islamic scholar and reformer who led the jihad that founded the Sokoto Caliphate. His preaching and leadership initiated the movement that established the caliphate.
Muhammad Bello: A son of Usman dan Fodio who became the second sultan and a scholar of the Sokoto Caliphate. He consolidated the state after its founder’s death and authored influential works.
Battle of Kwatarkwashi: A 1903 battle in which British forces defeated the Sokoto army near the caliphate’s capital. The battle opened the way for British occupation of Sokoto.
Oyo Empire: A Yoruba empire that dominated parts of present-day southwestern Nigeria before its nineteenth-century decline. Its political traditions and southern location differed from Sokoto’s Islamic emirate system.
Emirate: A territory governed by an emir, often with substantial local authority. Emirs governed constituent territories while acknowledging the caliph’s authority.
Fulani War: The series of conflicts from 1804 that brought much of Hausaland under the Sokoto-led jihad. The war created the state through military victories and political realignment.
Nana Asma’u: A nineteenth-century Fulani poet, teacher, and scholar in the Sokoto Caliphate. Her teaching networks extended Islamic learning, especially among women.
Northern Nigeria Protectorate: A British colonial territory established in 1900 and incorporated into Nigeria in 1914. The protectorate absorbed the conquered caliphate into British rule.
Kanem-Bornu Empire: A long-lived state centered around Lake Chad, with roots predating the Sokoto Caliphate by centuries. Bornu was a neighboring rival whose rulers resisted Sokoto expansion.
