Solar luminosity

Solar luminosity is the Sun’s total energy output per unit time, approximately 3.83 × 10²⁶ watts. It is also a standard reference unit for comparing stellar luminosities.

Solar core: The Sun’s central region, where nuclear fusion releases most of its energy. Fusion in the core supplies the energy that ultimately determines the Sun’s output.
Luminosity: The total energy emitted by an object per unit time. Solar luminosity is the Sun-specific value of this general physical quantity.
Stellar classification: The organization of stars by observable properties such as spectrum, temperature, and luminosity. Luminosities expressed in solar units help distinguish stars along classification diagrams.
Faint young Sun paradox: The puzzle that early Earth remained relatively warm despite the young Sun’s lower luminosity. It connects the Sun’s long-term luminosity history with evidence for early liquid water.
Proton–proton chain: A sequence of nuclear reactions that converts hydrogen into helium and releases energy in Sun-like stars. This fusion chain is the Sun’s dominant energy source.
Watt: The SI unit of power, equal to one joule of energy transferred per second. Solar luminosity is expressed in watts because it measures energy output per second.
Hertzsprung–Russell diagram: A plot that relates stars’ luminosities to their surface temperatures or spectral types. The Sun’s luminosity locates it on this central map of stellar properties.
Solar luminosity variation: Changes in the Sun’s total radiative output over timescales from minutes to billions of years. The present value is a baseline for measuring short-term fluctuations and long-term evolution.
Radiative zone: The region inside a star where energy is transported outward mainly by photons. Energy generated in the core passes through this layer before reaching the convective envelope.
Astronomical unit: The standard unit of length based on the mean Earth–Sun distance. The Earth–Sun distance connects measured solar flux to total solar power.
