Solo Man

Solo Man is an archaic human population known chiefly from fossils found near the Solo River in Java, Indonesia. The fossils are often classified as late Homo erectus.

Homo erectus: An extinct human species that lived across Africa and Eurasia for nearly two million years. Solo Man is commonly treated as a late, regional population of this widespread species.
Ralph von Koenigswald: A German-Dutch paleontologist who studied Java’s fossil record and named several fossil hominins. His work helped establish the Ngandong fossils as a distinct assemblage.
Ngandong 7: A hominin skullcap recovered from the Ngandong fossil site in Java. It is one of the well-known cranial specimens used to characterize Solo Man.
Homo erectus taxonomy: The study of how fossils assigned to Homo erectus should be classified and divided. Solo Man’s status depends on whether late Java fossils belong within Homo erectus.
Ngandong: A fossil site on Java’s Solo River known for remains of late Homo erectus. Its principal skull and leg fossils underpin the name Solo Man.
