Solomon Asch

Solomon Asch (1907–1996) was a Polish-American social psychologist whose research examined conformity, social perception, and how group pressure affects individual judgment.

Max Wertheimer: A German psychologist who helped found Gestalt psychology, the approach that studies organized patterns of perception. Wertheimer was Asch’s mentor at the New School for Social Research.
Asch conformity experiments: A series of experiments in which participants judged line lengths after hearing a unanimous group give incorrect answers. These experiments are Asch’s best-known demonstration of conformity under group pressure.
Social psychology: The scientific study of how people’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior are influenced by others and social settings. Asch helped establish experimental research on social influence within this field.
Independence of judgment: The ability to form and express a judgment without adopting others’ views merely because of social pressure. Asch’s results showed both public conformity and substantial resistance to group pressure.
Hermann von Helmholtz: A German scientist whose work spanned physics, physiology, and theories of perception. Asch’s account of social perception drew on Helmholtz’s idea that perception involves active interpretation.
Conformity: A change in belief or behavior to align with a group or social norm. Asch’s experiments measured whether participants would conform to a group’s incorrect judgment.
Social perception: The processes by which people form impressions and judgments about other people and social situations. Asch studied how context shapes the perception of people, not only judgments of lines.
Groupthink: A group decision-making failure in which pressure for agreement suppresses critical evaluation. Asch’s work informs discussion of how group pressure can distort individual contributions.
Stanley Milgram: An American social psychologist known for experiments on obedience to authority. Milgram’s obedience studies followed Asch’s experimental investigation of social pressure.
Unanimity: Complete agreement among members of a group. A single dissenting ally sharply reduced conformity in Asch’s experiments.
