Solomon Islands campaign

A series of World War II land, sea, and air operations in the Solomon Islands from 1942 to 1945, fought chiefly between Allied and Japanese forces.

Guadalcanal campaign: A 1942–1943 campaign to seize and defend Guadalcanal, the first major Allied land offensive against Japan in the Pacific. The campaign began with the Allied landing on Guadalcanal in August 1942.
Island hopping: A military strategy that bypasses some enemy-held positions while capturing others as stepping stones toward strategic objectives. Allied forces isolated many Japanese bases instead of capturing every island.
Attack on Pearl Harbor: Japan's December 7, 1941 attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet base in Hawaii. The attack brought the United States into the war against Japan.
South Pacific Area: A World War II Allied command covering operations across much of the South Pacific. Its forces directed major parts of the Solomons offensive under Admiral William Halsey.

Tokyo Express: The Allied name for Japanese nighttime destroyer runs that delivered troops and supplies to Guadalcanal. These runs sustained Japanese forces while Allied ships contested their supply routes.
