Solon

Solon was an Athenian statesman, lawgiver, and poet whose reforms in the early sixth century BCE abolished debt bondage for Athenians and reorganized political participation.

Seisachtheia: Solon’s cancellation of debts and removal of debt-bondage markers in Athens. This measure gave concrete form to Solon’s response to debt crisis.
Solonian property classes: The four wealth-based groups Solon used to classify Athenian citizens for political and military duties. Property classes determined eligibility for offices and obligations under the reforms.
