Solution

A solution is a homogeneous mixture in which one or more solutes are distributed at the molecular or ionic scale through a solvent.

Solvent: A substance that dissolves another substance to form a solution. The solvent is the continuous component in which a solution’s solute is dispersed.
Dissolution: The process by which a solute disperses into a solvent to form a solution. It describes how the components become mixed at the particle scale.
Aqueous solution: A solution in which water is the solvent. Water-based solutions are central to biological and environmental chemistry.
Suspension: A heterogeneous mixture containing particles large enough to settle or be separated by filtration. Unlike a solution, a suspension does not keep its dispersed particles uniformly mixed indefinitely.
Solute: A substance dissolved in a solvent to form a solution. Its particles become uniformly distributed through the solvent.
Solvation: The interaction in which solvent molecules surround and stabilize solute particles. Solvation helps keep dissolved particles distributed throughout the solution.
Buffer solution: A solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. Buffers use dissolved components to stabilize acidity in experiments and organisms.
Colloid: A mixture with dispersed particles intermediate in size between those in solutions and suspensions. Colloids can look uniform but contain larger dispersed particles than true solutions.
Concentration: A measure of the amount of a substance in a specified amount of mixture or solution. It quantifies how much solute a solution contains.
Solubility: The maximum amount of a substance that can dissolve in a given solvent under specified conditions. It sets how much solute can remain dissolved at equilibrium.
