Solvent effect

A solvent effect is the influence of a solvent’s properties on the behavior, reaction rates, and equilibria of dissolved substances. It arises from interactions such as solvation, polarity, and hydrogen bonding.

Solvation: The stabilization of dissolved particles through interactions with surrounding solvent molecules. Solvation is the direct molecular process behind many solvent effects.
Solvent polarity: A solvent’s capacity to stabilize charge separation and polar molecular structures. Polarity often predicts how a reaction or equilibrium changes when solvents are exchanged.
Solvent polarity scales: Empirical and physical scales used to compare how solvents stabilize charged or polar species. No single scale captures every solvent interaction relevant to a reaction.
Solvent: A substance that dissolves another substance to form a solution. Solvent effects begin with the medium surrounding dissolved species.
Dielectric constant: A measure of how strongly a material reduces electrostatic interactions between charges. It helps explain how solvents stabilize ions and polar transition states.

Chemical equilibrium: A dynamic state in which forward and reverse reaction rates are equal. Solvents shift equilibrium by changing the relative free energies of chemical species.
Hydrogen bonding: An attractive interaction involving a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom and another electronegative atom. Solvent hydrogen bonds can stabilize reactants, products, or transition states differently.
Grunwald–Winstein equation: An empirical equation relating solvolysis rates to solvent ionizing power and nucleophilicity. It quantifies how solvent properties influence ion-forming substitution reactions.
