Somali diaspora

The Somali diaspora comprises people of Somali origin and their descendants living outside the Horn of Africa, in communities shaped by migration, family ties, and transnational connections.

Somali Civil War: A protracted conflict that began in Somalia in 1991 after the central government collapsed. Its violence and displacement drove large refugee movements from Somalia.
Warsan Shire: A Somali British poet whose work explores migration, family, gender, and belonging. Her poetry gives intimate expression to displacement and inherited memory.
Hawala: An informal value-transfer system that moves money through brokers without requiring funds to cross borders physically. Somali households and businesses use hawala networks to send and receive funds.

Somali Revolution: A military coup in Somalia in 1969 that brought Mohamed Siad Barre to power. Political repression and upheaval prompted some Somalis to leave before the state collapsed.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali: A Somali-born Dutch-American writer and former politician known for criticizing Islam. Her public career illustrates contested debates about identity and representation.
Remittance: A transfer of money sent by a migrant to people or organizations in another place. Remittances connect diaspora livelihoods with families and institutions in Somalia.
Somali American: A person of Somali origin or ancestry who lives in the United States. The United States is a prominent destination with distinctive resettlement histories.
Somali refugee: A person who has fled Somalia and meets the legal or customary definition of a refugee. Refugee flight accounts for a major part of diaspora formation.
Abdi Warsame: A Somali American politician who served on the Minneapolis City Council. His election reflects Somali American participation in local government.
