Knowra Somali Plate Somali Plate The Somali Plate is a tectonic plate underlying much of eastern Africa and the western Indian Ocean. It is separating from the Nubian Plate along the East African Rift.
East African Rift : A continental rift system extending from the Afar region through eastern Africa toward Mozambique. This rift marks the boundary where the Somali Plate separates from the Nubian Plate.
Tectonic plate : A large, rigid section of Earth's lithosphere that moves over the underlying mantle. The Somali Plate is one such moving section of lithosphere.
East African Rift System : A vast network of rifts and associated structures marking extension across eastern Africa. Its mapped structure provides the continental framework for defining the plate's western boundary.
Lake Tanganyika : A deep African rift lake occupying part of the western branch of the East African Rift. Its basin is a prominent landscape feature formed within the plate's active rift zone.
Afar Triple Junction : A tectonic junction in Ethiopia where the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East African rift systems meet. Here, the Somali Plate boundary connects with two oceanic spreading systems.
