Somali Region

Somali Region is a regional state in eastern Ethiopia, inhabited primarily by ethnic Somalis and bordering Somalia, Djibouti, and Kenya.

Ethiopian federalism: Ethiopia’s system divides the country into regional states with constitutionally recognized powers. Somali Region exercises regional self-government within Ethiopia’s federal structure.
Ethiopian Empire: The Ethiopian Empire was the monarchy that ruled Ethiopia until the revolution of 1974. Imperial expansion brought Somali-inhabited territories under Ethiopian rule.
Abdi Iley: Abdi Mohamed Omar, known as Abdi Iley, led Somali Region from 2010 to 2018. His tenure became closely associated with regional security forces and political repression.

Haud: The Haud is a seasonal grazing region spanning eastern Ethiopia and adjacent Somali territories. Colonial-era boundary changes divided grazing lands used by Somali communities.
Mustafa Mohammed Omar: Mustafa Mohammed Omar is an Ethiopian politician who became president of Somali Region in 2018. His administration followed a major change in regional leadership and security policy.
Somali Region livestock trade: Somali Region livestock trade moves animals through domestic markets and cross-border routes toward export ports. Livestock sales connect pastoral households to regional and international markets.
Somaliland: Somaliland is a self-declared independent state in the northwestern part of Somalia, recognized internationally as part of Somalia. Its contested status contrasts with Somali Region’s recognized position inside Ethiopia.
