Somalia

Somalia is a country in the Horn of Africa, on the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. Its territory includes a long coastline and diverse arid and semi-arid landscapes.

British Somaliland: A British protectorate in the north of present-day Somalia from the late nineteenth century until 1960. It became independent in 1960 and united with the former Italian colony to form the Somali Republic.
Federal Government of Somalia: Somalia’s national government, established under the provisional constitution adopted in 2012. It shares constitutional authority with member states in Somalia’s federal system.
Somali Sea: The northwestern part of the Indian Ocean adjoining Somalia’s eastern coast. It defines a major maritime boundary and supports fishing and shipping.
Horn of Africa: The easternmost region of Africa, centered on Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. Somalia occupies the peninsula’s eastern edge and is central to its regional geography.
Italian Somaliland: An Italian colonial territory in the south and east of present-day Somalia, administered by Italy until 1941. Its colonial borders and institutions shaped the southern half of the state formed in 1960.
Federal Member States of Somalia: Regional constituent states that exercise powers within Somalia’s federal system. Their relations with the national government shape political authority and resource management.
Gulf of Aden: A sea passage between Yemen and the Horn of Africa connecting the Red Sea with the Arabian Sea. Somalia’s northern coast overlooks this strategic route between Europe and Asia.
Somali people: An ethnic group indigenous to the Horn of Africa, sharing Somali languages and cultural traditions. Somali communities live across Somalia and neighboring countries, crossing modern borders.
Somali Republic: The state formed in 1960 by the union of the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. Its creation marks the beginning of independent Somalia.
Somali Civil War: A prolonged conflict that began with the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991. The war fragmented state authority and drove repeated efforts to rebuild national institutions.
