Sonderbund War

The Sonderbund War was an 1847 Swiss civil war in which federal forces defeated a Catholic conservative alliance of cantons, clearing the way for Switzerland’s 1848 federal constitution.

Sonderbund: A defensive alliance of seven Catholic conservative Swiss cantons formed in 1845. Its defeat was the war’s central military and political outcome.
