Sonni Ali

Sonni Ali was a fifteenth-century ruler who expanded the Songhai Empire across much of the western Sudan and established Gao as its center of power.

Songhai Empire: A West African empire that flourished along the Niger River from the fifteenth to the sixteenth century. Sonni Ali’s conquests laid the foundations for its imperial expansion.
Songhai cavalry: Mounted forces used by the Songhai state for warfare and rapid movement across the western Sudan. Cavalry helped Sonni Ali campaign quickly across the territories he sought to control.
