Sony PlayStation

Sony’s first home video game console, released in 1994 and built around CD-ROM games. Its 3D graphics and broad game library helped establish Sony as a major console maker.

PlayStation CPU: The PlayStation’s 32-bit RISC processor, designed by LSI Logic and operating at 33.8688 MHz. It coordinated the console’s game logic and supplied geometry data to the graphics hardware.
Nintendo PlayStation: A prototype console developed through a Sony–Nintendo partnership to combine Super Nintendo hardware with CD-ROM technology. The abandoned project preceded Sony’s decision to make its own console.
Final Fantasy VII: A 1997 role-playing game by Square, released for the PlayStation and known for its cinematic presentation. Its success helped demonstrate the commercial reach of PlayStation CD-ROM games.
Nintendo 64: Nintendo’s 64-bit home console, released in 1996 and based on cartridge games. Its cartridges contrasted with the PlayStation’s cheaper, higher-capacity optical discs.
PlayStation GPU: The PlayStation’s graphics processor, which drew textured polygons and handled effects such as shading and blending. Its polygon throughput enabled the console’s characteristic real-time 3D visuals.
Ken Kutaragi: A Sony engineer and executive who led the development of the original PlayStation. His persistence inside Sony helped turn the console project into a product.
Gran Turismo: A 1997 PlayStation racing game developed by Polyphony Digital, featuring licensed cars and detailed driving simulation. It showcased the console’s ability to support a large, technically ambitious racing game.
Sega Saturn: Sega’s 32-bit home console, released in 1994 in Japan and 1995 elsewhere. It competed directly with the PlayStation but used a different and more complex hardware design.
CD-ROM: An optical disc format that stores digital data and is read by a laser. The console’s discs offered far more storage than typical cartridges of its era.
Sony Computer Entertainment: The Sony division established in 1993 to develop and publish PlayStation hardware and software. It gave the new console a dedicated organization and game business.
