Sophistic movement

The Sophistic movement was a fifth-century BCE Greek intellectual movement whose teachers trained students in rhetoric and debated knowledge, virtue, and civic life.

Rhetoric: The art of using language effectively to inform, persuade, or move an audience. Sophists made persuasive speaking a teachable skill for public life.
Protagoras: A Greek Sophist associated with the claim that the human being is the measure of all things. His relativist-sounding dictum became the movement’s most famous statement about knowledge.
Epideictic oratory: Public speaking that praises or blames, often in ceremonial settings. Sophists used display speeches to demonstrate verbal control and teach persuasive technique.

Dissoi logoi: A Greek exercise or text presenting opposing arguments on the same question. Arguing both sides trained students to test claims and adapt to controversy.
Plato: An ancient Greek philosopher whose dialogues examine ethics, knowledge, politics, and reality. His dramatic portrayals often criticize Sophists for selling instruction and prioritizing persuasion.
