Sophocles

Sophocles was a fifth-century BCE Athenian tragedian whose surviving plays include Oedipus the King and Antigone. His drama shaped the structure and themes of Greek tragedy.

Oedipus the King: A Greek tragedy in which Thebes’ king discovers that he unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. Its investigation of a plague’s cause is Sophocles’ most influential model of tragic discovery.
Greek tragedy: A dramatic form performed in ancient Greece, commonly presenting mythic conflict through serious action and choral song. Sophocles wrote within this genre and helped establish its classical form.
Pericles: An Athenian statesman who led the city during much of its fifth-century BCE prominence. Sophocles’ lifetime overlapped with the political leadership associated with Athens’ cultural expansion.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose works include influential analyses of poetry, drama, and rhetoric. His Poetics uses Oedipus the King to illustrate how tragedy can produce recognition and reversal.
Sophoclean authorship: The study of whether plays attributed to Sophocles were composed by him and how their texts developed. The surviving corpus is incomplete, and ancient attributions do not settle every question of authorship.
Antigone: A Greek tragedy about Antigone’s defiance of King Creon’s ban on burying her brother. Its clash between civic command and familial duty became a defining Sophoclean conflict.
Dionysia: Athenian festivals honoring Dionysus that included dramatic competitions and public performances. Sophocles presented tragedies at Athens’ major dramatic festivals.
Aeschylus: An Athenian tragedian of the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, known for works including the Oresteia. Aeschylus represents the earlier tragic generation against which Sophocles’ innovations are often understood.
Poetics: Aristotle’s treatise analyzing poetry, including epic and tragedy. Its account of plot and tragic effect helped make Sophocles’ drama central to theories of tragedy.
Lost plays of Sophocles: Tragedies by Sophocles known from ancient testimony or fragments but not preserved as complete plays. The surviving seven plays represent only a small portion of his reported dramatic output.
