Sophus Lie

Sophus Lie (1842–1899) was a Norwegian mathematician who founded the theory of continuous transformation groups, now developed through Lie groups and Lie algebras.

Lie group: A smooth group whose elements vary continuously and whose multiplication and inversion are smooth. Lie’s transformation groups became the modern framework for continuous symmetries.
Infinitesimal generator: A vector field that generates a continuous one-parameter family of transformations through its flow. Lie used generators to replace finite transformations with locally tractable data.
Felix Klein: A German mathematician known for the Erlangen Program and influential work in geometry. Klein and Lie jointly developed the transformation-group perspective on geometry.
Lie's Third Theorem: A theorem stating that every finite-dimensional real Lie algebra is associated with a simply connected Lie group. It formalizes the passage from infinitesimal structures to continuous groups central to Lie’s program.
Lie algebra: A vector space with a bilinear bracket operation that encodes the local structure of a Lie group. This algebraic structure distilled the infinitesimal transformations Lie studied.
Lie bracket: An operation on vector fields measuring the infinitesimal failure of their flows to commute. Brackets capture how the infinitesimal transformations combine.
Erlangen Program: Felix Klein’s 1872 proposal to classify geometries through the transformation groups that preserve their properties. It supplied a geometric setting for Lie’s study of continuous groups.
Lie series: A formal series describing the action of a vector field’s flow on functions. Lie used such series to calculate transformations generated by infinitesimal operators.
Noether's theorem: A theorem relating continuous symmetries of a physical system’s action to conserved quantities. It exemplifies the lasting use of continuous symmetry methods in physics.
One-parameter group: A continuous family of transformations indexed by a real parameter and compatible with group composition. Such families are the basic units from which Lie’s transformation groups are assembled.
