Sorbonne

The Sorbonne is a historic Paris institution founded as a college of theology and later associated with the University of Paris. Its name is also used for university institutions and buildings in the Latin Quarter.

Robert de Sorbon: A French theologian who founded the Sorbonne college in Paris in 1257. His charitable college gave the Sorbonne its name and original purpose.
Faculty of Theology of Paris: The theological faculty of the medieval University of Paris, influential in Christian doctrine and education. The Sorbonne college became closely identified with this faculty’s teaching and authority.
May 1968 events in France: A wave of student protests and strikes in France during May 1968 that challenged established institutions. The Sorbonne became a major site of occupation and debate during the protests.
