Sound recording and reproduction

Sound recording and reproduction is the capture, storage, and playback of sound through mechanical, magnetic, optical, or digital systems. It preserves sound as a physical trace or encoded signal that can later be reproduced.

Microphone: A transducer that converts sound waves into electrical signals. It converts incoming sound into a signal that recording systems can store.
Phonautograph: A device that traced sound vibrations onto a surface but could not play them back. It made sound vibrations visible before practical sound reproduction existed.
Sound wave: A mechanical disturbance that propagates through a material medium. Recordings represent patterns in the pressure variations that reach a microphone or stylus.
