Soundboard

A resonant surface that receives vibrations from strings and transfers them to the surrounding air, increasing an instrument’s acoustic output.

Bridge (instrument): A component that transmits vibrations from strings to an instrument’s body or soundboard. It carries string motion directly into the soundboard.
Musical acoustics: The study of how musical sound is produced, transmitted, and perceived. Soundboards are studied as vibrating radiators in musical acoustics.
Piano: A keyboard instrument in which hammers strike strings to produce sound. A large wooden soundboard amplifies the piano’s many strings.
Soundboard (resonator): A resonant surface or assembly that couples vibrations to surrounding air in an acoustic device. This broader usage includes resonators beyond stringed musical instruments.

Acoustic guitar: A fretted string instrument whose hollow body radiates sound without electronic amplification. Its top plate acts as the soundboard driven by the bridge.
Drumhead: A stretched membrane that vibrates when struck or otherwise excited. A drumhead radiates sound through membrane motion, unlike a typical rigid wooden soundboard.
Vibration: Repeated motion around an equilibrium position. Soundboard motion is vibration driven by the strings.
Natural frequency: A frequency at which a system tends to oscillate after being disturbed. The soundboard has natural frequencies that shape its response.
