Soundtrack

A soundtrack is the music and other recorded sound accompanying a film. It can include dialogue, sound effects, ambient sound, and music, whether released separately or not.

Film score: Music composed or selected to accompany a film, often written to support its scenes and themes. The score supplies the soundtrack’s composed musical layer.
Production sound mixer: The crew member responsible for recording usable sound on a film set. This role captures dialogue and location sound during filming.
Silent film: A motion picture presented without synchronized recorded dialogue, though screenings often included live music or effects. Live accompaniment preceded the recorded soundtracks associated with talkies.
Leitmotif: A recurring musical theme associated with a character, place, idea, or situation. Recurring themes can connect scenes and signal meaning across a film.
Live film scoring: The performance of music in synchronization with a film screening, usually by musicians in the venue. It supplies accompaniment live instead of relying solely on a fixed recording.
Sound effects: Recorded or created sounds used to represent actions, objects, and environments in audiovisual works. Effects make actions and settings audible beyond the music.
Automated dialogue replacement: A process in which actors rerecord dialogue in synchronization with previously filmed performances. ADR replaces dialogue that was unclear or unsuitable in the original recording.
The Jazz Singer: A 1927 American film featuring synchronized musical performances and spoken dialogue using the Vitaphone system. Its success helped establish synchronized sound as a commercial feature of cinema.
Temp track: Temporary music edited into a film during production to guide pacing and mood before the final score exists. A temp track helps filmmakers test musical timing before original music is finished.
Film score album: An album release focused on music composed or arranged as a film’s score. It is narrower than a soundtrack album that may include songs and other material.
