Substitution (hazard control) : Replacing a hazardous substance, process, or material with a less hazardous alternative. Removing the hazardous input can eliminate the source rather than contain its release.
Respiratory etiquette : Practices such as covering coughs and sneezes to reduce respiratory particle release. It reduces infectious particles at the point they leave an infected person.
Personal protective equipment : Equipment worn to reduce exposure to hazards, including respirators, gloves, and protective clothing. It protects an individual without necessarily reducing the hazard released at its source.
Occupational exposure : Contact with chemical, physical, biological, or ergonomic hazards arising from work. Reducing releases at work can lower the amount workers encounter.
Enclosure (hazard control) : A control that physically separates a hazard from people or the surrounding environment. Enclosing the source limits escape into surrounding spaces.
Surgical mask : A loose-fitting medical mask that blocks droplets and particles emitted by the wearer and offers limited wearer protection. Worn by an infectious person, it can limit respiratory emissions at their source.
Administrative controls : Work practices and policies that reduce exposure by changing how, when, or where tasks are performed. These controls manage exposure through procedures rather than acting directly on the hazard source.
Air pollution : The presence of substances in air at concentrations that can harm health or ecosystems. Controls on emissions sources can reduce pollution before it disperses.
Local exhaust ventilation : Ventilation that captures airborne contaminants near their point of generation and conveys them away. It captures contaminants at the source before they disperse through a room.
Dust collection system : Equipment that captures airborne dust near its generation point and transports it for filtration or disposal. It removes particles before they spread through a work area.
