South African literature

South African literature comprises writing produced in South Africa across its languages and communities, shaped by the country’s colonial history, apartheid, and continuing social change.

Cry, the Beloved Country: Alan Paton’s 1948 novel follows a rural priest searching for his son in a racially divided South Africa. Its compassionate account of injustice became an internationally influential early anti-apartheid novel.
Bessie Head: Bessie Head was a South African-born novelist and short-story writer who lived in exile in Botswana. Her fiction explores exile, community, and identity across South African and Botswana settings.
