South Carolina

South Carolina is a state in the southeastern United States, bordered by North Carolina, Georgia, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its coastal plain includes part of the Venus flytrap’s native range.

Atlantic Coastal Plain: A low-lying physiographic region extending along the Atlantic coast of the United States. This broad region covers much of South Carolina and includes habitats where Venus flytraps grow.
Francis Marion National Forest: A national forest in coastal South Carolina containing pine forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitat. It protects coastal habitats within the region where Venus flytraps are native.

Reconstruction era: The period after the American Civil War when the United States rebuilt the South and redefined citizenship. South Carolina’s postwar politics became a major setting for Reconstruction’s conflicts and reforms.
Longleaf Pine: A southeastern U.S. pine adapted to frequent fire and once dominant across extensive coastal forests. Longleaf pine ecosystems are part of South Carolina’s characteristic coastal landscape.
Congaree River: A South Carolina river formed by the confluence of the Broad and Saluda rivers. Its floodplain supports the forests protected at Congaree National Park.
