South Dakota

South Dakota is a U.S. state in the north-central Great Plains, admitted to the Union in 1889. Its landscapes range from prairie to the Black Hills.

Great Plains: A vast region of flat and rolling grassland extending across central North America. Most of South Dakota lies within this grassland region.
Dakota Territory: A U.S. organized territory established in 1861 that was divided into North and South Dakota in 1889. South Dakota emerged from the southern portion of this territory.
South Dakota agriculture: The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock across South Dakota’s farms and ranches. Farming and ranching make productive use of the state’s prairie soils and grasslands.
North Dakota: A U.S. state in the northern Great Plains, bordering Canada and South Dakota. The two states formed from Dakota Territory and entered the Union on the same day.
Black Hills: An isolated mountain range in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. This forested upland sharply contrasts with the surrounding plains.
Great Sioux Reservation: A reservation established by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie for the Sioux people in the northern Great Plains. Its later reduction opened vast areas of present-day South Dakota to non-Native settlement.
Corn production in the United States: The cultivation of maize for food, animal feed, fuel, and industrial uses across the United States. Corn is among South Dakota’s leading crops.
Nebraska: A U.S. state in the central Great Plains, directly south of South Dakota. The Missouri River marks much of their shared boundary.
Missouri River: The longest river in North America, flowing from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. Its reservoirs and course divide South Dakota into distinct eastern and western regions.
Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868): An agreement between the United States and several Indigenous nations that recognized the Great Sioux Reservation. Its promises and subsequent violations shaped land claims and conflict in the region.
