South Korean labor movement

The South Korean labor movement is organized worker activity seeking better wages, working conditions, and political rights through unions, strikes, and collective action.

Yushin Constitution: The 1972 constitution that entrenched Park Chung Hee’s authoritarian rule in South Korea. Its authoritarian system restricted independent organizing as export-led industrialization expanded the workforce.
Trade union: An organization that represents workers in negotiations over pay, conditions, and workplace rights. Unions are the movement’s main durable organizations for collective representation.
Park Chung Hee: South Korea’s president from 1963 to 1979, who pursued rapid industrialization under authoritarian rule. His government’s labor controls formed the political setting workers and organizers confronted.

Lee So-sun: A South Korean labor activist who campaigned for workers’ rights after her son Jeon Tae-il’s death. She helped sustain public attention and organizing around the struggle for labor rights.
Minimum wage in South Korea: The legally mandated lowest hourly wage employers may pay workers in South Korea. Union advocacy and public campaigns have shaped disputes over its level and coverage.
Enterprise unionism: A union structure in which workers organize primarily within a single company. Company-based organization contrasts with efforts to build solidarity across workplaces and industries.
