South Orkney Islands

The South Orkney Islands are an archipelago in the Southern Ocean, northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Argentina and the United Kingdom claim sovereignty over them, subject to the Antarctic Treaty System.

Antarctic Peninsula: The northernmost part of mainland Antarctica, extending toward the tip of South America. It lies southwest of the islands and anchors their regional geography.
Nathaniel Palmer: An American sealer and explorer active in the Southern Ocean in the early nineteenth century. He and James Weddell are associated with the islands' 1821 discovery.
