South Sandwich Islands

The South Sandwich Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the southern Atlantic Ocean, east of the Antarctic Peninsula, and part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Scotia Arc: A curved chain of submerged ridges and islands linking the Andes region to the Antarctic Peninsula. The islands form the eastern, volcanic part of this arc.
Andesite: A fine-grained volcanic rock commonly formed in subduction-zone magmas. Andesitic eruptions occur at volcanoes in the island chain.
James Cook: A British naval officer and explorer who led three major voyages of exploration in the Pacific and Southern oceans. Cook’s 1775 expedition sighted and claimed several islands in the chain.
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area: A large protected marine area surrounding South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Its rules govern conservation and fishing across the surrounding waters.

Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen: A Russian naval officer who led an Antarctic expedition from 1819 to 1821. His expedition explored and charted parts of the archipelago after Cook.
British Antarctic Survey: The United Kingdom’s national polar research institute, conducting science in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. Its research includes monitoring the region’s environment and wildlife.
Saunders Island: A volcanic island in the South Sandwich Islands containing the active Mount Michael. Its summit lava lake is among the chain’s most striking features.
