South Seas Mandate

The South Seas Mandate was a League of Nations mandate administered by Japan from 1920 to 1947 over former German islands north of the equator in the western Pacific.

League of Nations mandate: A territory administered by a state under League of Nations authority, supposedly for the benefit of its inhabitants. The mandate system gave Japan international authority over the former German islands.
German New Guinea: A German colonial territory established in the western Pacific in the late nineteenth century. Its northern islands became part of the mandate after Germany lost its overseas possessions.
Kijūrō Shidehara: A Japanese diplomat and politician who served as foreign minister and promoted international cooperation in the 1920s. His diplomatic approach shaped Japan’s engagement with the League and the mandate system.
Battle of Saipan: A major 1944 battle in which United States forces captured Saipan from Japan. The battle ended Japanese control of a central island in the mandate and opened the route toward Japan.
Mandate for Palestine: A League of Nations mandate administered by Britain in Palestine from 1920 to 1948. Its political and demographic conditions differed sharply from Japan’s island mandate.
Class C mandate: A League of Nations mandate category allowing a territory to be administered under the mandatory power’s laws as part of its territory. The islands’ small populations and proximity to Japan placed them in this restrictive category.
