South Shetland Islands

The South Shetland Islands are an archipelago in the Southern Ocean, about 120 kilometres north of the Antarctic Peninsula. Their sovereignty is claimed by Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom, with claims governed by the Antarctic Treaty System.

Antarctic Peninsula: The northernmost part of mainland Antarctica, extending toward South America. The peninsula lies south of the archipelago and anchors its regional geography.
King George Island: The largest island in the South Shetland Islands, containing several Antarctic research stations. It is the archipelago’s principal hub for research and air access.
William Smith (explorer): An English sealer and navigator credited with sighting the South Shetland Islands in 1819. His reported sighting brought the archipelago to wider attention.

Edward Bransfield: An Irish-born Royal Navy officer who surveyed the South Shetland Islands and sighted the Antarctic Peninsula in 1820. His voyage produced an early chart of the islands and surrounding waters.
Eduardo Frei Montalva Base: A Chilean Antarctic station and airfield on King George Island. Its airfield supports access to the archipelago and nearby Antarctic research sites.
South Orkney Islands: An Antarctic island group southeast of the South Shetland Islands, across the Weddell Sea. Their similar polar setting contrasts with their different position and territorial administration.
