South Sulawesi

A province in southwestern Indonesia, occupying the southern part of Sulawesi and including nearby islands. Its capital is Makassar.

Makassar: The capital and largest city of South Sulawesi, located on the province’s southwestern coast. The province’s administrative center and main urban hub.
Gowa Sultanate: A Makassarese Muslim kingdom that became a major power in southern Sulawesi during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its former territory centered on the region that includes present-day Makassar.
Port of Makassar: A major seaport in Makassar serving domestic and international shipping in eastern Indonesia. It carries the province’s historic maritime role into modern commerce.
North Sulawesi: An Indonesian province at the northeastern end of Sulawesi, with Manado as its capital. It occupies the island’s opposite end and has a different regional center and cultural mix.
Bugis people: An Austronesian people of Indonesia, concentrated in South Sulawesi and known for a strong maritime tradition. One of the province’s largest communities, with a distinct language and history.
Bone Sultanate: A Bugis kingdom in eastern South Sulawesi that became a leading regional power. Its history shaped the province’s eastern interior and Bugis political traditions.
Phinisi: A traditional Indonesian sailing vessel associated especially with the Bugis and Makassarese of South Sulawesi. The craft embodies local shipbuilding and seafaring traditions.
West Sulawesi: An Indonesian province on the western side of Sulawesi, established in 2004. It borders South Sulawesi and was formerly part of the same province.
Makassarese people: An ethnic group of southwestern Sulawesi whose traditional language is Makassarese. Their homeland includes Makassar and much of the province’s southwest.
Makassar War: A conflict from 1666 to 1669 in which the Dutch East India Company and its allies defeated Gowa. The defeat altered power across the region that later became South Sulawesi.
