South Tarawa

South Tarawa is the densely populated southern part of Tarawa Atoll in Kiribati. It contains the national capital and most of the country’s population and urban infrastructure.

Tarawa Atoll: A coral atoll in Kiribati’s Gilbert Islands, formed around a central lagoon. South Tarawa occupies the atoll’s southern islets along its lagoon.
Teinainano Urban Council: The local government authority serving much of South Tarawa, including the capital area of Bairiki. It administers services across several of South Tarawa’s central islets.
Overpopulation: A condition in which a population places demands on resources and infrastructure beyond their capacity. High population density strains South Tarawa’s limited land, housing, and services.
Bikenibeu: A populated islet in South Tarawa, home to government facilities and the University of the South Pacific’s Kiribati campus. It is one of the area’s principal residential and institutional centers.
Kiribati: An island country in the central Pacific Ocean, spanning the equator and the International Date Line. South Tarawa is Kiribati’s political and population center.
Betio Town Council: The local government authority responsible for municipal administration on Betio, Kiribati. Betio is governed separately from the central South Tarawa council area.
Freshwater lens: A layer of fresh groundwater that floats above denser saltwater beneath a small oceanic island. South Tarawa relies on vulnerable groundwater lenses for part of its water supply.
Ambo: A South Tarawa islet that hosts the Kiribati Parliament and other national institutions. Its parliamentary complex illustrates the concentration of state functions in the capital.
Atoll: A ring-shaped coral reef or island enclosing a lagoon, formed around a sinking volcanic island. Its narrow reef islets and lagoon define South Tarawa’s geography.
Bairiki: An islet in South Tarawa that serves as Kiribati’s governmental and administrative center. Government offices and national institutions cluster in this part of the capital area.
