Knowra Southeast Indian Ridge Southeast Indian Ridge The Southeast Indian Ridge is a mid-ocean ridge separating the Indo-Australian and Antarctic plates. It creates oceanic crust at a moderate-to-fast spreading rate.
Seafloor spreading : The process by which magma rises at a mid-ocean ridge and forms new oceanic crust. This process creates new crust along the ridge as the plates move apart.
Indo-Australian Plate : A major tectonic plate encompassing much of the Indian Ocean and the Indian subcontinent, with internal deformation and proposed subdivisions. It forms the northern side of the ridge’s plate boundary.
Gondwana : An ancient southern supercontinent that included Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, India, and Madagascar. The ridge’s plate boundary developed as Gondwana fragmented and its constituent plates separated.
Australian–Antarctic Discordance : A deep, unusually broad region of the Southeast Indian Ridge near 127°E, marked by thin crust and complex seafloor topography. This distinctive segment contrasts with the ridge’s more typical sections.
Mid-ocean ridge : An underwater mountain chain formed where tectonic plates diverge and new oceanic crust develops. The Southeast Indian Ridge is one example of this global seafloor-spreading system.
Antarctic Plate : A major tectonic plate underlying Antarctica and much of the surrounding Southern Ocean. It forms the southern side of the ridge’s plate boundary.
Indian Ocean : The ocean basin between Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. The Southeast Indian Ridge forms part of the Indian Ocean’s tectonic framework.
Macquarie Triple Junction : A junction in the Southern Ocean where the Australian, Pacific, and Antarctic plates meet. The ridge’s eastern end approaches this complex meeting of three plates.
Transform fault : A strike-slip fault that accommodates horizontal motion between crustal blocks, often offsetting sections of mid-ocean ridge. Transform faults link offset ridge segments and accommodate differences in spreading direction.
Plate tectonics : The theory that Earth's lithosphere is divided into moving plates whose interactions shape the planet’s surface. The ridge is a divergent boundary within the global plate-tectonic system.
