Southeast Sulawesi
A province of Indonesia occupying the southeastern part of Sulawesi island and nearby islands in the Banda and Flores seas. Its capital is Kendari.
Sulawesi: An Indonesian island between Borneo and the Maluku Islands, with four major peninsulas. Southeast Sulawesi occupies the island’s southeastern peninsula and adjoining areas.
Wakatobi National Park: A marine national park in Southeast Sulawesi protecting reefs and island ecosystems in the Wakatobi archipelago. It is the province’s best-known protected marine landscape.

Tolaki people: An Indigenous ethnic group of southeastern Sulawesi, especially associated with the Konawe and surrounding areas. Tolaki communities are among the largest on the province’s mainland.
Kendari: A city and the capital of Southeast Sulawesi Province, on the island’s southeastern peninsula. The provincial government and principal urban center are based here.
Coral Triangle: A tropical marine region spanning parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. The province’s reef seas lie within this global center of marine biodiversity.
Konawe Kingdom: A historical kingdom in the Konawe region of southeastern Sulawesi. It represents precolonial political traditions on the province’s mainland.
Butonese people: An ethnic group associated with Buton Island and neighboring parts of southeastern Sulawesi. Butonese communities connect the province’s island society to the former sultanate.
Baubau: A city on Buton Island in Southeast Sulawesi, known for the historic Buton Sultanate fortress. It is a major island city outside the provincial capital.
Nickel mining: The extraction of nickel-bearing ores for stainless steel, batteries, and other industrial uses. Nickel extraction and processing are major forces in Southeast Sulawesi’s economy and land use.
