Knowra Southern England Southern England Southern England is the broad geographical and cultural region comprising the southern part of England. Its boundaries vary by context, and it has no single formal administrative definition.
South East England : One of England’s nine regions, covering much of the country’s southeast. This formal region overlaps with common definitions of Southern England but does not define all of it.
South East commuter belt : The towns and suburbs in southeast England from which many residents travel to work in London. Daily commuting ties a wide area beyond the capital to London’s economy.
Northern England : The broad geographical and cultural region comprising the northern part of England. It is Southern England’s most common counterpart in discussions of regional identity and inequality.
London metropolitan area : The continuous urban area centred on London, extending into surrounding counties. Its growth spreads urban development and commuting well beyond Greater London’s boundary.
South West England : One of England’s nine regions, extending from Gloucestershire and Wiltshire to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It is included in broad uses of Southern England, though its western extent makes regional definitions vary.
Great Western Main Line : A major railway route linking London with Reading, Bristol, Cardiff, and southwest England. It links the capital to western parts of Southern England and beyond.
Midlands : The central part of England, commonly divided into the East Midlands and West Midlands. The Midlands complicates any simple north–south division of England.
Green Belt (United Kingdom) : A planning designation that restricts development around urban areas to limit sprawl and preserve open land. Green Belt policy around London shapes settlement growth across parts of Southern England.
Greater London : The administrative region covering London and its 32 boroughs, plus the City of London. London is Southern England’s largest urban centre and often shapes perceptions of the region.
South West Main Line : A railway route connecting London Waterloo with towns in Surrey, Hampshire, and Dorset. Its branches connect London with southern counties and coastal settlements.
