Southern Rhodesia

Southern Rhodesia was a British self-governing colony in southern Africa from 1923 until 1965, when its white-minority government declared independence unilaterally. It became Zimbabwe in 1980.

British South Africa Company: A chartered company that administered and exploited territories in southern Africa from the 1880s until the 1920s. It established settler rule in the territory before the colony gained self-government.
Responsible government: A system in which an elected legislature and ministers govern domestic affairs while remaining within a larger empire or state. It describes the constitutional arrangement Southern Rhodesia received in 1923.
Cecil Rhodes: A British imperialist and mining magnate whose company established colonial control over territories later named Rhodesia. His company’s expansion laid the foundations of settler rule in the territory.
Unilateral Declaration of Independence: Southern Rhodesia’s 1965 declaration of independence from Britain without British approval. It transformed the colony into an internationally unrecognized breakaway state.
Nyasaland: The British protectorate that became Malawi upon independence in 1964. Its African-majority population and opposition to federation differed sharply from Southern Rhodesia’s settler politics.
Jameson Raid: An 1895–1896 failed incursion into the South African Republic organized by Leander Starr Jameson. The raid intensified tensions that contributed to the Matabeleland and Mashonaland rebellions.
Southern Rhodesian Legislative Assembly: The elected lower house of Southern Rhodesia’s colonial legislature. It gave the colony’s enfranchised electorate a formal route to shape domestic policy.
Godfrey Huggins: A Southern Rhodesian prime minister from 1933 to 1953 who later became the first prime minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He led the colony through its long period of responsible government and federation.
Rhodesian Bush War: A 1964–1979 guerrilla conflict between the Rhodesian government and African nationalist forces. The war destabilized the breakaway regime and pressed the parties toward negotiations.
Northern Rhodesia: A British protectorate in central Africa that became Zambia upon independence in 1964. Unlike Southern Rhodesia, it entered independence under majority rule before the colony’s transition.
