Southern Thailand

Southern Thailand is the peninsula region extending south from the Isthmus of Kra between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Its geography, Malay cultural heritage, and Buddhist-Muslim diversity distinguish it from Thailand’s other regions.

Malay Peninsula: A long peninsula in Southeast Asia bordered by the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and the South China Sea. Southern Thailand occupies the peninsula’s northern section.

Isthmus of Kra: The narrow land bridge connecting mainland Southeast Asia to the Malay Peninsula. It marks the region’s northern transition from mainland Thailand.
Thai Muslims: Muslims who are citizens of Thailand, belonging to diverse ethnic and linguistic communities. They form a significant part of the region’s population and public life.
Sultanate of Patani: A Malay Muslim sultanate that ruled Patani and surrounding areas before their incorporation into Siam. Its legacy informs Malay identity and political memory in the far south.
Phuket: Thailand’s largest island and a major tourism destination in the Andaman Sea. Its resorts and ports make it a prominent gateway to the western coast.
Pattani: A province and city in Thailand’s far south with a Malay Muslim majority and a history as a regional center. It lies within the principal area affected by the insurgency.
