Sovereigntism

Sovereigntism is a political doctrine or movement that prioritizes a state’s independent authority and resists transferring powers to supranational institutions.

State sovereignty: The principle that a state holds supreme authority within its territory and independence in its external relations. Sovereigntism makes this authority its central political priority.
European Union: A political and economic union whose member states share institutions and exercise some powers jointly. Its pooled authority has made it a central focus of European sovereigntist movements.
Federalism: A system of government that divides authority between a central government and constituent political units. It offers a structured division of powers rather than prioritizing the state as the sole authority.
Constitutional nationalism: A political approach that grounds constitutional legitimacy and state institutions in national identity. It can translate sovereigntist priorities into claims about a nation’s constitutional order.
French Gaullism: A French political tradition associated with Charles de Gaulle, emphasizing national independence and a strong state. Gaullism is a prominent historical form of sovereignty-centered politics within European cooperation.
Popular sovereignty: The principle that legitimate political authority ultimately derives from the people. Sovereigntist arguments often present national self-rule as an expression of popular authority.
Brexit: The United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, completed in 2020. The campaign for withdrawal made restoring national decision-making a prominent sovereigntist claim.
Internationalism: The political principle that cooperation among nations can advance shared interests and obligations. It favors cross-border coordination that sovereigntist movements may regard as limiting national choice.
Democratic deficit: A perceived gap between the authority of political institutions and their democratic accountability. Sovereigntists invoke it when they argue that distant institutions lack adequate public control.
Scottish independence movement: The political movement seeking independence for Scotland from the United Kingdom. It pursues sovereignty for a substate nation rather than preserving an existing state’s authority.
