Soviet–Afghan War

A war fought from 1979 to 1989, in which Soviet forces intervened to support Afghanistan’s communist government against mujahideen and other opposition groups.

Operation Storm-333: The Soviet assault on Kabul’s Tajbeg Palace on December 27, 1979, that killed Afghan leader Hafizullah Amin. The operation marked the invasion’s decisive opening and installed Babrak Karmal.
People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan: The Afghan communist party that seized power in the 1978 Saur Revolution and governed during the Soviet intervention. Its factional struggles and policies weakened the government the Soviets sought to sustain.
Ahmad Shah Massoud: An Afghan mujahideen commander who led resistance forces in the Panjshir Valley. His campaigns became a prominent example of organized resistance to Soviet operations.
Operation Cyclone: The CIA program that supplied money and weapons to Afghan resistance groups during the Soviet–Afghan War. It was the principal channel for U.S. covert support to the insurgency.
Dissolution of the Soviet Union: The breakup of the Soviet Union into fifteen independent states in 1991. The war strained Soviet resources and prestige, though it was not the sole cause of the breakup.
Afghan mujahideen: Afghan armed resistance groups that fought the Soviet-backed government and Soviet forces during the war. Their decentralized insurgency made Soviet control outside major centers difficult.
Hafizullah Amin: An Afghan communist leader who ruled Afghanistan from September to December 1979. Soviet leaders feared Amin’s rule would destabilize their ally and threaten their influence.
Jalaluddin Haqqani: An Afghan Islamist commander who led resistance forces in eastern Afghanistan during the war. His network connected local insurgency with outside support and later conflicts.
Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence: Pakistan’s military intelligence agency, commonly known as the ISI. The agency distributed much of the covert assistance reaching Afghan factions.
Afghan Civil War (1992–1996): The conflict among Afghan factions that followed the fall of the communist government in 1992. The Soviet-backed government survived Soviet withdrawal, then collapsed into factional warfare.
