Soviet atomic bomb project

The Soviet state program that developed nuclear weapons and tested its first atomic bomb, RDS-1, on 29 August 1949.

RDS-1: The Soviet plutonium implosion bomb detonated at the Semipalatinsk Test Site on 29 August 1949. This was the project’s first successful device, closely modeled on the American plutonium bomb.
Manhattan Project: The United States-led wartime program that developed the first nuclear weapons. Its bombings of Japan made the strategic stakes of Soviet nuclear development immediate.
