Dissident movement in the Soviet Union

A loose network of Soviet citizens who publicly challenged state policies and restrictions on civil liberties, especially through writing, petitions, and protest.

Samizdat: The clandestine copying and circulation of uncensored texts in the Soviet Union and other communist states. Underground publication let dissidents circulate banned testimony and arguments despite censorship.
